We are pleased to announce the return of the annual Student Safety & Leadership Weekend for 2026!
The event will take place October 9th-11th 2026 at Glenmore Lodge.
What is it all about?
Developing the confidence and ability to safely plan and lead club events. This opportunity is aimed at university and college club members of all abilities to increase their skills and knowledge and to equip those who are in a position of responsibility in a club with safety and leadership principles which will filter down to club members. We also encourage students new to paddlesport to attend as there will be opportunities to experience a variety of environments and disciplines throughout the weekend.
Who is it for?
Students! Paddle Scotland and Glenmore Lodge are proud to organise this safety and leadership focused weekend, specifically aimed at Scottish university and college students in Paddle Scotland affiliated clubs. To attend the event where you will learn to paddle safely, lead fun events, and plan club activities you must be a Paddle Scotland member and linked to one of the affiliated student clubs.
What is it?
A sociable weekend of paddling, developing on and off water safety skills from a range of workshops and National Governing Body Safety Awards.
The focus of the 2026 event is to provide safety awards across moderate and advanced white water environments. Safety awards are a pre-requisite for some leadership awards and this weekend will give you the opportunity to obtain them.

When?
The weekend kicks off Friday evening with evening workshops, followed by an action packed schedule for Saturday and Sunday.
Cost
This is a subsidised event supported by Paddle Scotland and Glenmore Lodge to support student clubs to improve safety and leadership. The total cost for the residential weekend is £120, discounted to £90 for bookings made before 9am 20th July (or until sold out).
There are a limited number of early bird tickets available so make sure you book quickly!
We are delighted to be able to offer participants the option to pay in instalments, the deadline for this payment option will be the 28th of August.
The package includes Friday and Saturday night B&B, Friday night workshop, Saturday and Sunday full day workshops, transport during the event, Saturday evening dinner, lunch, refreshments and cake on both days, access to equipment if required.
Dinner is not available on Friday evening.
Where?
We are delighted to once again hold this year’s event at the National Outdoor Training Centre, Glenmore Lodge, in the heart of the Cairngorms. Glenmore Lodge is easily reached by a variety of transportation options.
We encourage sustainable travel and plan to offer a pick-up from Aviemore train station on Friday late afternoon / early evening, returning on Sunday early evening. We also encourage car sharing.
Accommodation is onsite, either in the main building or in the wooden chalets of Glenmore Lodge.
Event Workshops:
Friday Evening - Trip Planning Abroad
Do you know a country's access laws or whether or not permits have to be sought before you can get onto a river? This classroom based workshop will look at the important logistics and requirements of planning a university paddling trip abroad.
Friday Evening - River Trip Planning
Knowing where to find river levels and how quickly a river can rise after rain is crucial. This classroom-based workshop focuses on the essential information needed for thorough, successful and safe river trip planning, emphasising the importance of prior preparation.
Friday Evening - Rope Work for White Water Kayakers
This practical workshop focuses on simple, safe, and effective rope work essential for white water environments. It will cover the use of throwlines, webbing, and carabiners. If time allows, the session will also delve into mechanical advantage techniques, along with advice on essential gear to carry and optimal storage.
Friday Evening - Rolling in the Pool
Mastering the kayak roll is a key skill for safe and confident paddling. This hands-on session is designed to help club volunteers and paddlers develop the knowledge, technique, and confidence to roll their kayak reliably in a supportive environment.
Saturday & Sunday (2-day) - Develop White Water Skills in a Moderate Environment
This Moderate Water Skill Development Workshop is for paddlers comfortable on moving water who want to consolidate and progress skills on moderate white water (Grade 2/3 and exploring 3+). The focus is on building consistency, confidence, and control in dynamic conditions. Safety is central to this session, covering group awareness, communication, positioning, and introducing/developing contextual rescue skills. Participants will leave feeling more capable and in control on moderate rivers, with a clearer path to advanced white water.
Saturday & Sunday (2-day) - White Water Safety
The White Water Safety Award is designed to support paddlers to be independent participants on grade 2(3) white water rivers.The fundamentals of safety and rescue will be taught in this workshop. Laying a solid foundation is the cornerstone of development and this 2 day course will layer on skills and techniques which will help keep you safe in the white water environment. Paddlers will explore simple strategies and safe skills that can provide the tools to solve common paddling issues. All modules are interactive, practical sessions, discussing and using equipment, and exploring possible solutions to common issues in a moderate white-water grade 2 (3) environment. Attendees will be awarded the White Water Safety Award which is a prerequisite for the White Water Leader Award.
Saturday & Sunday (2-day) - White Water Leader (Moderate Water)
The White Water Leader Qualification supports paddlers who wish to lead groups of white water boats on grade 2(3) white water rivers. These two days of training will cover leadership skills, and the associated personal skills, safety and rescue skills for leading groups of up to 6 in the Moderate Water environment in kayaks. As this training is delivered by British Canoeing Awarding Body White Water Leader Providers, they will also be able to help you identify an appropriate action plan to support your progress towards a successful assessment.
Saturday & Sunday (2-day) - Develop White Water Skills in an Advanced Environment
This Advanced Water Skills Workshop is for experienced paddlers confident on grade 2+/3 rivers (or above), aiming to refine performance in advanced white water. The session will focus on precision, efficiency, and decision-making in complex conditions. Participants will enhance their ability to paddle confidently and efficiently on grade 3/4 and develop the judgment required for safe group operation in advanced white water, moving toward independent paddling in demanding environments.
Saturday & Sunday (2-day) - Advanced White Water Safety
The Advanced White Water Safety Award equips kayakers and canoeists with simple strategies and safe, practical skills for grade 3 and 4 white water rivers. This interactive workshop focuses on equipment use, problem-solving, and essential safety/rescue techniques for advanced, hyper-dynamic river environments. Successfully completing the course awards the Advanced White Water Safety Award, a prerequisite for the Advanced White Water Leader Award.
Saturday & Sunday (2-day) - Advanced White Water Leader Training
The Advanced White Water Leader supports paddlers who wish to lead groups of white water boats on grade 4 white water rivers. These two days of training will cover leadership skills, and the associated personal skills, safety and rescue skills for leading groups of up to 4 in kayaks in the Advanced Water environment. As this training is delivered by British Canoeing Awarding Body White Water Leader Providers, they will also be able to help you identify an appropriate action plan to support your progress towards a successful assessment.
