Special Considerations and Reasonable Adjustments
Paddle Scotland and British Canoeing Awarding Body (BCAB) are committed to providing equal access and
opportunities for training and assessment.
REASONABLE ADJUSTMENTS:
We consider the needs of all learners, including those with impairments, to ensure they can successfully gain certification.
We aim to make courses and assessments accessible from the start. If a learner requires extra support, we allow reasonable adjustments to help them access courses and assessments to demonstrate their ability.
Reasonable adjustments will not give learners an unfair advantage. Learners must meet all assessment requirements and demonstrate their knowledge and skills according to the published specifications. Assessment standards will not be altered, and no exemptions will be permitted.
Reasonable adjustments are not appropriate if they affect core skills such as coaching ability and will not be allowed.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:
We offer special considerations for candidates who have a temporary illness, injury, or other sudden issue during an assessment.
This applies if:
- A candidate could not attend or finish an assessment by the deadline, OR
- A candidate attended but believes their performance was badly affected by a sudden problem.
Important: Special considerations are different from reasonable adjustments. Special considerations are for unexpected, short-term issues. Reasonable adjustments are for long-term disabilities or impairments and are planned for in advance.
Rule of Thumb:
If the adjustment:
- is minor,
- is offered equally to all if needed,
- doesn’t alter the assessment or training criteria or give an unfair advantage,
then no Reasonable Adjustment or Special Consideration application is needed.
For further guidance or examples of considerations and practical adjustments, please see our policy below.

How to apply:
To apply for Special Considerations and Reasonable Adjustments please log in to JustGo and complete the application via Member Credentials > searching for "Special Consideration Application" or "Reasonable Adjustment Application" > complete the required fields and save to submit.
Your Reasonable Adjustment Application must submitted at least 4 weeks before the course or assessment date.
Special Consideration Applications will only be considered if they are received within five working days of the assessment date (in advance or retrospectively).
