The 22-year-old, who won the U23 world kayak cross title three years ago, earned GB's sixth medal of the competition and joined his sister in occupying a podium at this event for the first time, Lois having done so in the kayak cross individual on Monday.

On this occasion, Lois won the small final in the women's kayak cross, with Joe Clarke doing likewise in the men's. Great Britain finished third in the overall medal table, behind only Czechia and Australia.

Sam Leaver was in fantastic form throughout the day in the men’s racing, winning his heat, quarter-final and semi-final to earn a shot at the showpiece.

He made a strong start and led through the opening gate before losing ground at gate 2, when he was crowded out by Dimitri Marx. Leaver held firm to stay third, a position he held following a review, to pick up bronze.

“We hope this will be the first of many World Championship medals for Sam,” said performance director Tom Duggan. “He is a student of kayak cross and the preparation and work he puts in within his training group, working alongside Joe, is really impressive.

“He has been working really hard this week targeting a medal so it is great to see him get one.”

Clarke entered with gold in the kayak cross individual event already under his belt and his bid for a repeat was going well when cruised through his first three races unbeaten.

A hard-fought semi-final saw Clarke caught up with Vit Prindis at an early gate and the Czechia paddler got away fastest, consigning the two-time Olympic medallist to third, but he bounced back to claim a dominant victory in the small final.

Ben Haylett came through his opening race in second but finished fourth in heat five, which was won by Sam Leaver.

Lois Leaver eased into the women’s semi-finals by winning three consecutive races and made a flying start off the ramp in her bid for the big final. But the Scot got tangled up with Slovakia's Sona Stanovska at gate 2, allowing Noemie Fox and Miren Lazkano to gain a headstart and ultimately progress.

Leaver picked herself up to land an impressive triumph in the small final, capping a hugely impressive week.

Kimberley Woods and Nikita Setchell raced each other in the preliminary round, coming home first and second respectively, but Setchell was then fourth in her heat. Woods, who earned her 16th World Championship medal with K1 bronze earlier this week, exited at the quarter-final stage.

Reflecting on the week as a whole, Duggan added: “I am really pleased with the performances we put in this week. It has been a really good start to the Olympic Qualification System.

“It is only the first race of nine for the rankings but to have achieved some of the performances we have on what will be the Olympic venue is really important as we build confidence and momentum.

“The conditions have been really difficult in terms of the temperatures for the athletes and coaches to contend with, but it has given us a flavour of what to expect in 2028. I am super proud of how everyone, athletes and coaches, have come together to put in the performances we have.”
