Sprint Season Gets Underway - with Scottish Success
15 May 2026

Last weekend, the women’s K4 led the way at the opening Sprint World Cup of the season in Szeged.

The women's K4 team of Emily LewisZoe ClarkDeborah Kerr and Kristina Armstrong, an unchanged squad from that which placed ninth at the 2025 World Championships in Milan, led British success in Szeged, Hungary.

They finished second in heat two of the K4 Women's 500m, before securing a place in the B finals with a fourth-place finish in their semi-final in a time of 1:35.60, just 0.05 seconds away from an A final spot.

The quartet delivered a personal best to win their 500m B final and place themselves inside the top 11 nations for Olympic Qualification Ranking on day two in Szeged, the opening World Cup of the season with changes to the Olympic qualification process for LA 2028.

For the women's K4, the top 11 nations from four different continents will qualify for the LA28 Games.

While the best eight results out of ten count, with Szeged marking the first of those ten events, finishing in the top 11 was not critical at this stage with nine races still to go.

But the women's K4 will be buoyed by a strong start and afforded less pressure in races going forward.

Deborah Kerr, who started her career with Kirkcaldy Canoe Club, earned a top ten finish at the opening World Cup of the season in Szeged having qualified to the A final in the K1 Women's 200m on day three in Hungary.

Having already helped the K4 Women's team to sit in the Olympic qualifying places on Saturday, Kerr stormed into the A final after finishing third in her semi-final in a time of 40.42 seconds.

In the final, the 28-year-old, who medalled at the same World Cup back in 2021, improved on that time to place eighth in 40.06.
