Announcement: Coach of the Year Finalists
17 January 2026

We are excited to announce the finalists in the next category of the Recognition Awards: Coach of the Year.

This award is for a coach, either volunteer or professional, that has gone above and beyond in their paddlesport coaching activity.

Georgina Maxwell is nominated for her significant work in women's whitewater kayaking, where her coaching has transformed the paddling and mental resilience of many individuals, and has been a major force behind a positive change in the gender balance on whitewater rivers. Her dedication has never wavered even as she became a new mum, and she has used this opportunity to create a network of other paddling mums.

Chris Heaney is nominated for his outstanding leadership and expertise in developing the surf-kayaking community, highlighted by his instrumental role in both revitalising the surf committee and integrating surf-kayak activity at the Lost Shore Surf Resort. As a British Canoeing Level 5 Coach (Surf) with circa four decades of experience as a surfer, he offers exceptional technical expertise and coaching insight.

Niamh Shannon is nominated for her dynamic, person-centred approach to coaching young people, which combines technical expertise with a deep commitment to fostering confidence and self-belief. She co-created the Pinkston Youth Forum, guiding nine young paddlers through transformative experiences like a four-day River Spey expedition and teaching them to roll and navigate whitewater with confidence.

Finalists and winners will be celebrated on Friday 30 January - tickets are now available to join us for the Recognition Awards celebration for £10/£30.
